As a justice oriented research lab, we are always open and excited to engage in collaboration with others looking to build a better world. If you would like to connect, you can email Dr. Cha at jmijin@ucsc.edu. Please make sure to include in your email a brief description of who you/your organization is, and what you would like to work on/discuss.
If you are a prospective postdoctoral scholar, especially if you are interested in the Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship or UC Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship, please send your project proposal, CV, and how your research aligns with the lab to jmijin@ucsc.edu
PhD students interested in working with Dr. Cha can do so within the UCSC Environmental Studies department. Competitive candidates will have a Masters degree in a relevant field of study (including, but not limited to, environmental studies, sociology, legal studies, geography, and political science) and be interested in working on similar research projects as those currently occurring in the lab.
For students interested in applying please send your CV, a brief paragraph of your current research interests, and answers to the following 3 questions to jmijin@ucsc.edu. If you seem like a good fit for the lab, Dr. Cha will reach out to you and schedule a follow-up zoom conversation.
1. What are you looking for in a PhD advisor? What type of supervision are you interested in?
2. What motivated you to pursue a PhD and what types of career paths do you envision afterwards?
3. Why do you want to work with Dr. Cha/join the UCSC Environmental Studies department?
Occasionally the lab has research opportunities (both paid and volunteer) for UCSC undergraduate students to work on projects with members of the lab. In the past this has included summarizing legislation, researching case studies, and literature reviews.
If you are interested in potentially working/volunteering with the lab it is highly recommended that undergraduate students take one of the courses taught by Dr. Cha prior to reaching out. Courses include ENVS 140, ENVS 84, ENVS 183/184, ENVS 196.
If you are interested in working/volunteering on a research project, please send an email to jmijin@ucsc.edu with a brief response to the following questions, your most recent CV/Resume, and an unofficial transcript.
1. What are your research interests? What do you hope to get out of this research experience?
2. What are your career goals, how does this research experience fit in with those goals?
3. What prior research experience do you have (It is ok if you don’t have any)
4. What does Environmental Justice mean to you?
